Heraklion Crete or creta
Perfecture of Heraklion is the largest one of the four perfectures of Crete . It is situated between the perfectures of Rethymnon and Lasithi. It covers an area of 2,641 square klm kai its population reaches 250,000 citizens.
The capital of the perfecture is the city of Heraklion, the largest city of Crete with the biggest harbour.
The perfecture is divided into seven regions: Pirgiotisis, Kainouriou, Monofatsiou, Vianou, Pediados, Temenous, Maleviziou.
Chania Crete or creta
The town of Chania is the second biggest on the island and it was its capital when Crete was intepented state 1898-1913. It’s a charming town especially the old Venetian Town circled by walls around the old harbor is very lively at the evenings with a lot of lights, bars, cafe restaurants. The narrow winding streets are lined with old Venetian buildings some with coat of arms still visible and souvenir shops. The towns has it’s own sandy beach west of the old harbor but longer and beautiful beaches can be found out of the town.
Lassithi Crete or creta
The prefecture of Lassithi occupies the far -eastern part of the island and it is divided into 8 municipalities: Aghios Nikolaos, Ierapetra, Sitia, Neapoli, Makri Gialos, Lefki, Oropedio (Lassithi Plateau) and Itanos.
It is embraced by three seas: the Cretan Sea in the north, the Libyan Sea in the south, the Carpathian Sea in the east, whilst in the west, the mountain range of Dikti prevails imposingly, spreading its verdant mountainsides down to the plains of Mirabello and those of Ierapetra, in a picturesque contrast.
Rethymnon Crete or creta
Rethymno is one of the four prefectures of Crete. It is situated between Chania to the west and Heraklio to the east. The prefecture of Lasithi is situated at the eastern-most part of the island. Crete is covered with a dense network of roads with the National Road being its main artery, which follows the northern coastal line from west to east
